The Goats of San Francisco

Posted on 13. Oct, 2009 by Mark in Other Animals

A few weeks ago we had one of my favorite fall San Francisco happenings over on my side of town: Goats R Us came to town. Yes indeed, there is a company by that name and every year they bring their flock to the hillier parts of the city where lawn mowers dare not go to clear out underbrush and fire hazards. A herd of hundreds descends upon the City College Ocean Avenue campus around the old Balboa Reservoir and for a few days they eat,  fart, poop and thrill locals nonstop until they’re done.

Hey Mark – they feed on the hill across from our house as well. Their smell stays for days after they are pulled out. Lots of fun for kids, and you’re right, the dogs.

That’s a hill of a story. Nothing more colorful either than a few four-letter words in your text to describe their cycle of eating. Not sure your grandmother would have approved of that part.

These goats are oh, so cute and such precious faces on
each and everyone of them. Some with horns, some not
and two males will occasionally fight by bucking each
    other with their horns.
I was astounded at the first sight of them in Russian Hill
    by the Reservoir.
Pretty stinky….and what happens to all the poop they
leave behind. Are they also eating plants that we don’t
want eaten. I saw them climbing up some shorter
    trees to eat the leaves.
Bottom line…..how much does this cost San Francisco,
and who pays for it? The city tax paying suckers!
Hey, they should let them roam through our filthy streets
and they probably would do a better job than our useless
    city street cleaners.
Anyway, I did enjoy seeing them, however, and as
amazing as these goats look, it does seem
to me that this is all going to go sour. Animal protection
people, neighbors filing complaints, unsanitary conditions
left behind,…..perhaps some sick goats are out there too.
I have some real doubts about this project.
