Editor’s Note: This is the first of what I plan to be many more in-depth stories about some of the amazing animals I get to work with.

Claire Bear in her new home

Last month I photographed a 7 1/2 year old Basset Hound named Claire Bear for a My Mutt poster supporting Golden Gate Basset Rescue — the group that pulled her and 6o other Bassets from squalid conditions at a commercial breeding facility north of Sacramento. Fortunately for Claire Bear and a good number of the other Bassets freed that day this story has had a relatively happy outcome.

But it does serve as an object lesson in the problems and heartbreak puppy mills like this one can cause and why it’s so important that the public and all aspiring pet guardians know about them and avoid them.

Bassets in a filthy run on their rescue day. Photo courtesy of Golden Gate Basset Rescue

Claire Bear spent 6 years there and for most of them she was force bred — having as many as 8 litters.
She and the other dogs were severely undersocialized and by the time they were rescued in December 2009 they were living in total filth. (You can read further details on the GGBR site).

After the rescue Claire Bear lived with a foster family for almost 2 years before landing in her forever home last fall and still bears the psychological scars of the ordeal she experienced at the puppy mill. Until very recently she really showed no signs of knowing how to be a dog. She spent most of her time hiding under a blanket-covered coffee table, knew no commands, didn’t know how to play, was afraid of toys and didn’t bark at all.

Claire Bear outside in an enclosure her new guardian built for her

Thanks to the incredible patience and kindness of her new mom Claire Bear is showing some small but encouraging signs of improvement. At first she tolerated no contact and only left the safety of her coffee-table fort in the middle of the night when everyone slept. When I met her in January she allowed her mom to touch her and, when coaxed, climbed onto a couch. However, it took close to two hours before she would stay in the same room with me. I was not able to touch her and she still did not respond to food, treats or any voice commands from her mom.

In the three weeks since then her mom reports she’s begun showing interest in deli chicken and now knows the words “up” and “din din”. This is all really positive but it’s also painstakingly slow going. Much of the time dogs like her who miss out on normal socialization and human interactions in the formative months never get a chance to progress to this point or show any improvement. That’s because it takes someone like her mom who literally spent months planning and preparing for Claire Bear’s arrival and and now devotes hours a day working with her. Claire Bear still has a long a way to go and may not ever get to the point where she trusts people. It’s my hope that I’m able to report back regularly on her continued progress and I’d love at some point to spend more time with her and get new pictures as she settles in at her forever home.

Claire Bear, (then named Claire) on her rescue day

Those familiar with me know I typically don’t dip into controversy or blog from a soap box but in cases like Claire Bear it’s really difficult not to.

In the end this is really a story about a courageous little dog and some truly remarkable and caring people who pulled her and five dozen other animals out of horrific conditions. However, you simply can’t escape the fact that puppy mills like the one she came from exist and they exist because there’s a market for them.

Though extreme in terms of the number of dogs, this is not isolated and there are dogs living in similar conditions right now around the country. There are even reports (not proven but also not isolated) that the puppy mill operators responsible for Claire Bear and her 60 companions are selling dogs again, though through intermediaries and not directly themselves.

The only way to remedy this as far as I’m concerned is to diminish that market by informing the new-pet crazed public about two things:

1) There are an overwhelming number of wonderful animals both young and old desperate for homes and living on borrowed time in shelters and foster homes all over the country.

2) If you simply refuse to go the adopted-pet route and must have a pure-bred puppy or kitten, do your research. Find and work with a reputable breeder. Check on them. Ask for references. If you can’t find any or they aren’t willing to give them to you that’s a good sign for you to look elsewhere.

I also have a blog programming note. Since I started blogging the photo of the day I’ve gotten some feedback that it would be more practical to provide a weekly summary on the blog since I already post the shots individually on Facebook. Great input, folks. So, that’s what I’ll be doing every Monday. Today’s list just covers the last three days but starting next Monday, I’ll post the week’s prior shots in a neat little package. Thanks for the input, folks and please let me know if you have any other ideas or requests

Sunrise shoots at Crissy Field are among the most dramatic that I do. Between the bay and the bridge catching that morning light just so it’s pretty breathtaking. The light is also a wee bit tricky because it comes up fast and changes by the second. Toss in a little speed demon like Odie — an outrageously cute chihuahua (and I think italian greyhound) mix with an outsized personality — darting around in the wet grass while you’re trying to line up the bridge and the light behind her and you have quite a shoot workout.

Odie’s mom received this shoot as a birthday present and I think Odie delivered. How about you?

My, my how the summer has flown by. This blog has been woefully untended so I’m remedying that with an extra fun post today. Muggsley and Ginja are great pooch pair from Burlingame who’s mom signed them to be My Mutts in the store downtown there. She had the awesome idea of photographing the two in the back seat of the truck they love to drive around with her in and I couldn’t have come up with a better concept myself. We got warmed up in their awesome back yard where they have a cool wooden bridge spanning the creek that flows through there and then moved on to ye olde truck. Check out how they did below. Muggsley is the stately, elder Great Dane-Pointer mix and Ginja is the Portuguese Water Dog.

Sometimes you run across a dog who’s just perfectly matched with his name. Case in point: Thor — a handsome German Shepherd mix I had the pleasure of working with a few weeks ago at McClaren Park on an atypical hot, sunny San Francisco summer morning. Thor has just about the richest, glossiest, most beautiful brown coat I’ve ever seen with a really cool white starburst on his chest (kind of a built-in superhero costume). He’s also definitely an all-terrain kind of guy equally at home on land, sea or air — especially if his pink ball is involved. You can see him in action below. Enjoy your sneak peek, Thor

There aren’t many shoots requiring as much energy as two-terrier sessions like the one I had at my outdoor studio a few weeks back with a pair of cute little rascals named Sydney and Mac. Mac, the little grey guy with extremely human-looking eyes is a bit timid but he managed to warm himself up and almost came up with a smile by the end of the session. Sydney is a Cesky terrier mix and the extrovert of the pair as you’ll soon see in their sneak-peek shots below. Enjoy the preview, guys!

I was thrilled to hear from Ow Nin’s parents a few weeks ago that they wanted to have a session with her. They rescued her 5 years ago through Soi Dog Foundation in Thailand and I’ve I’ve worked with two of their other dogs – Besos and Lek on My Mutt posters. She already had a poster done about 4 or 5 years ago but they wanted some more recent shots. We met at Stern Grove where I photographed the other two and had a great session. Ow Nin is a bit of a wanderer so we all got a bit of exercise following (and occasionally chasing) her around the park. As with many of the Thai rescues, Ow Nin’s eyes tell quite a story. They’ve seen a lot in this world of both the very worst and the very best we people can offer. Thankfully, she landed in a loving home here and for the last 5 years at least has seen the positive side of that equation. Here’s to many more of those happy years to you, Ow Nin.

For their My Mutt posters we wanted to try something a little different so we took them down to the Mission and photographed them in Lilac Alley in front of some of the wonderful murals painted there.

Both were a bit reserved and overwhelmed by the location so, as a fallback we decided to spend a little time back at home where they were more comfortable. You be the judge for which ones turned out best. I think they look great in all of them.
