I’ve photographed a lot of rabbits this year — more rabbits than cats as a matter of fact. Maybe I was just getting cocky but I actually thought I was starting to get a handle on them… at least until I ran into Sterling last weekend.

Sterling is lovely gray rabbit rescued through Save a Bunny who lives in a really cool loft in downtown San Francisco with a Portuguese Water Dog. The shoot started out fine and Sterling did some fairly cute poses with minimal intervention and coaxing. However, after about 10 minutes I could swear she was actually starting to scowl at me. By the end I fairly sure she was downright grumpy. Now, to be fair, it was a rainy afternoon, her mom did say that she preferred mornings and it’s entirely possible I’m being way to sensitive about the whole thing.

I don’t know. What does everyone else think? Evidence below?

Sterling, I’ll be happy to come back on a sunny day if you’d prefer….

Awww.

Classic profile

Not sure I like you shooting while I eat

Is it just me or is he raising his eyebrow?

See, both eyebrows look cocked to me? …and there’s that glint in his eye

I don’t know if bunnies can glare but in my world we call that giving the hairy eyeball

As I’ve been mentioning I’ve had quite a number of assignments involving bunnies of late. Most are tied to My Mutt (I know, they may want to think about broadening the scope) and my most recent subjects are a threesome living over near Berkeley who are all tied to the most-excellent Save a Bunny rescue organization in Mill Valley.

During the shoot I was bowled over, yet again, by how expressive and feisty bunnies can be. So, here we go. Here are the current lead candidates for the next My Mutt posters. Please comment on your favorites to help us decide which ones win.

And, on a personal note, I wanted to let everyone know that there’s only 2 1/2 days left in the competition for best pet photographer in the bay area. It’s really tight between 1st and 2nd place and I’d love to have your vote.

Anyone who’s shopped or walked by any of the Pet Food Express Stores in the Bay area has seen the My Mutt posters they have hanging in the shop and in the windows. They’re of dogs and cats adopted from various rescue groups. Owners make a donation to Pet Food Express in the name of their pet and the rescue group or shelter where they found them and Pet Food Express covers the costs of photography and poster production.
It’s a great way to support the rescue groups and shelters out there that have helped thousands of animals find their forever homes.

I was recently asked by Pet Food Express to be a photographer for this wonderful program and I couldn’t be more honored.

This week I want to highlight my first shoot which featured a nice old guy named Jake and his compadre, Badger who both belong to one of the founding members of Rocket Dog Rescue.

Check in again soon for outtakes from future shoots.
