Zev Valentine

When I found out I had a My Mutt assignment to photograph a dog named Zev Valentine I was, to say the least, intrigued. With a name like that he had a lot to live up to and boy did he ever exceed my expectations. Zev turned out to be beautiful brindle pitbull with love for life even bigger than his name. We went to Ft Funston (my destination of choice these days) and took advantage of the fall iceplants for background scenery.Zev spent the outing marking everything in sight, meeting and greeting lots of dogs, retrieving his wubba, and, believe it or not, climbing a tree. Buddy & Raider

You gotta love a dog named Buddy — especially a puppy named Buddy. I met this cute little guy and his larger housemate, Raider, over in Livermore this week for a holiday session. Buddy’s the guy in antlers — Raider went with Santa. We ended up taking Buddy out for a little play session in the neighborhood park afterwards and found out he’s definitely a stick guy. He also came through with a classic pitbull grin shot that I was lucky enough to be there for. You go, Buddy.

Sonora

Not only do I have a weakness for senior dogs but I’m a real sucker for German Shepherds (our last dog was a GSD and she ruled the house for almost 15 years). Introduce me to an older Shepherd and I’m hopeless.

Well, I was really hopeless last Friday when I met Sonora up at Lake Temescal in the East Bay. She’s a beautiful girl who’s almost 13 and represents everything I love about Shepherds: she’s loyal and watchful over her family (including her 2 1/2 year old sister), she’s smarter than most people and she’s delightfully neurotic and worried about everything.

Sonora, you did great, old girl. It was my pleasure working with you.

Jasper & Mabel

There’s nothing quite like Fort Funston and Ocean Beach on a fall afternoon here in San Francisco — the light is that perfect California gold and it’s still warm enough for you to hit the beach without a jacket. I met Jasper, Mabel and their mom down there last Thursday for a donated session they bid on at a recent animal welfare fundraiser. Jasper’s a spry aussie shepherd mix and Mabel’s a pitbull mix. Both of them love to play — Mabel’s a ball girl while Jasper prefers frisbees. We had a great time and got some really cool shots of them at play. We also got what may be my single favorite Smiling Dog shot of the year — a classic pitbull grin.

I thought it might be fitting to start following the theme of this blog literally. I photograph a lot of dogs (and cats — but reconciling that with this blog title is for another post entirely) and when you actually catch one grinning it can be a real rush. This week’s star is a miniature dalmatian named Junior. I had no idea there was such a breed as a miniature dalmatian until I met Junior but consider me smitten. He’s completely mellow, terribly cute and extremely photogenic
