Happy Halloween and Boo From the Biz

My dog, Bizzy, is such a good sport. As the four-legged companion of a professional pet photographer he endures a lot of impromptu modeling gigs that generally involve costumes he’d probably prefer to pee on than wear. This Halloween was no exception and I put poor Biz through more than usual because, I couldn’t (and still can’t) decide what his costume should be this year. I’ve narrowed it down to two: devil or Dracula. Weigh in and help me pick which way Biz should go bump in the night this Sunday.

Sometimes I wonder if Bizzy likes being with a pet photographer because, honestly, I make him do some fairly ridiculous things. That said, he’s pretty compliant and definitely enjoys the payment (Trader Joe’s cheese sticks). So, Happy Easter from Mark Rogers Photography and Bizzy.

Except for a new ball, nothing really gets my dog, Bizzy, more excited than a new costume. Yep, he loves ‘em but this year we had a hard time picking one. Would it be Count Barkula? Nope, cape got in the way. The old, but reliable pirate outfit? Nah, rumor had it the Cocker Spaniel down the street was seen modeling a fake peg leg. So, to play it safe we decided to go organic and green (well, orange) for 2009.Whaddya think?

Sometimes when you’re looking for something to laugh about you don’t need to go much further than your pet. With my dog, Bizzy, humor is a constant thing – pretty much everything he does makes me laugh. Today was no exception.

I was hard at work editing a recent shoot when I heard the distinct sound of a terrier snoring in the next room. Here’s what I saw…

Bizzy go Braugh

Can I just say that my dog is awesome? He is so tolerant and patient when dad dresses him for yet another seasonal photo shoot and, between you and me, I think he actually likes it. This year we tried our very first St Paddy’s day shoot and got the Biz’s green on. I’m thinking that on top of the Corgi and Jack Russell, Biz may have a wee bit o’ Leprechaun in the old bloodline. Happy St Paddy’s Day, everyone. Be sure to check out Biz on this week’s Dogster caption contest.

The Biz in His New Yard

Those of you who know my work understand I don’t really spend a whole lot of time in a traditional studio. That said, my wise and clever wife recently planted the suggestion of reconfiguring our backyard into an outdoor studio that I could invite clients to. Wow, talk about your great ideas.

Only one problem

Since we got him in early 2007, The Biz had taken what was once a pretty serviceable and low-maintenance backyard and converted it into a series of mulch piles. Einstein and Newton would be proud of the irresistible force that is Bizzy who, at only 15 pounds, managed to shift several cubic yards of very expensive pine mulch from an even 3-inch surface to a 3-foot slope against our neighbor’s fence. The rest of the yard pretty much looked like a moonscape.

We ended up working with a really great landscape architect from Redbud Design who came up with a beautiful plan designed to be beautiful and durable. The solution: fescue turf grass (virtually indestructible), some architectural amendments and cool Asian statuary we found at a great store in Berkeley.

The result is a peaceful little space with lots of durable turf for Bizzy to play on — not to mention a cool little guardian for all the little critters that visit us. Check it out…

My favorite part…the new Jizo statue. Jizo is traditionally a protector of kids, expectant mothers, firemen, & travelers. But I’ve decided to make him an honorary overseerer of pets as well.

Apologies to all my regular readers for the infrequent posting these past few weeks. Between a bunch of private sessions, My Mutt shoots, weddings (we’ve had a big uptick in those here in San Francisco since the state supreme court ruling) and my now-regular gig on Dogster’s blog I’ve barely had enough time to download shots from my flash cards and move on to the next event. Fear not, though, I’m going to make an effort to get back to Smile Like a Dog and commenting on all my favorite pet photog blogs out there.
