I’ve had a nice run with cats of late. Not only have there been more than usual but almost all of them have been total camera hams — which brings me to River, the ham of the hour. River’s mom had forewarned me that River might be a little shy but that was not to be the case. Almost as soon as I walked in the house we were on our back batting our baby greens for the camera. River’s housemate, Cat, even joined in on the fun and helped River offer me advice on what lens to use.

See how we did…

Two-cat shoots can sometimes be a challenge for pet photographers, especially when you need both cats in the same picture. I met Coconut and Peanut–two cute young Tabbies–last week for a My Mutt poster session done in the name of the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA. As with most cat sessions we had to warm up a bit first with individual shots (both these kitties are serious hams once they get going) before we got to the group finale. Let us know how you think it turned out…

Every time you think you’ve heard the best pet name ever along comes someone like Captain Skullcrusher. At the shelter where he was rescued, Skullcrusher’s name was just plain Captain. His new adoptive parents thought maybe a tougher handle would instill some confidence in the guy and the name just popped into their heads.

It’s all completely ironic, of course. CS is actually really sweet and reserved but he has a cataract in one eye that gives him a somewhat menacing look. It actually took a while to coax him out of his hiding spot behind the couch for this shoot but once he was out he did just fine. Check him out…

Of course, anyone visiting a blog called Smile Like a Dog will be a bit surprised to see pictures of cats. While most of my pet clients are of the canine variety I do get my fair share of feline posers and I have to say I’ve had a run lately with cats of the Abyssinian persuasion. My most recent session was with a trio of Abbies named Mike, Deano and Rose. Mike’s still very active and spry at the ripe old age of 18 and he’s got personality to spare. Deano and Rose are a bit more shy but no less photogenic. I’ll let you judge the results for yourself…
