Josie & Pumpkin: Bay Area Backroad Doggies

Last Sunday I got to do two of my favorite things simultaneously: hang out with great dogs and see some of the best scenery Northern California has to offer. Josie, a very senior Dalmatian, and Pumpkin, a spry seven-year old Golden belong to none other than Doug McConnell, former host of the long-running Bay Area Backroads show that ended it’s 23-year run on KRON last year. Doug’s now producing the popular OpenRoad with Doug McConnell: Exploring the West which covers outdoor travel throughout the west.

Doug’s also well-known for his love of animals and support of Bay Area animal welfare groups. His two dogs are going to be featured on a Pet Food Express My Mutt poster supporting San Francisco Animal Care and Control. Thanks for the hike, guys. Enjoy your sneak peek.

A Dog Named Dude

I’m a major Big Lebowski fan so when I found out I was going to be photographing a dog named Dude (I know, for purists he’d have to be named The Dude to be 100% accurate but this is close enough) I was pretty psyched. Dude’s an aptly named Golden Retriever who lives in the East Bay and loves playing with and dismembering stuffed toys. His current favorite is a giraffe that may well be missing a few parts since I saw him last weekend. Dude’s also an inveterate bird dog and managed to flush a Red-Tailed Hawk from the shrubs in the back yard while we were shooting. In addition to an appearance on this blog you can also catch Dude on Dogster where he’s the star of this week’s photo caption contest.

Last weekend a client gave me a wee bit of somewhat deserved grief for not featuring more Golden Retrievers like his beautiful dog, Maya, on my site. “Afterall,” he said, ” They’re only one of the top 5 most popular breeds in the country.” Odd, I thought, I know I’ve photographed more than my fair share but I wonder why I don’t have them up on my blog or any of my featured galleries. I spent some time going through my archives this week and hereby dedicate this post to Maya and all the other underserved Goldens in the San Francisco Bay area.
