Lately I’ve had a lot of shoots down on the coast near Half Moon Bay. It’s beautiful down there with dramatic views of the Pacific and a classic coastal small-town feel. And boy, do people love their dogs there. My last shoot was in Montara, a few miles north of Half Moon Bay with two older pooches. Snoopy, the elder of the two at 13, is a big gentle bear. Gemina (aka Gem) is a spry 11-year old with a bit of dobie in her and a penchant for hunting gophers. After our walk in a nearby park we ended up back at the house where I got to witness a monthly ritual: destruction of the stuffy toys. Snoop and Gem, check out your shots…

Cosmo and Elsa

Weekend before last I had the pleasure of photographing Cosmo (named after the father in Moonstruck) and Elsa: two senior Dachshunds living over in Potrero Hill. The two constantly reminded me of an older couple who’ve lived together for years and just know how the game is played. My favorite shot was one I was worried wouldn’t turn out — they love to poke their heads around the top of the stairs when their dad comes home — but I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Elsa and Cosmo: enjoy your sneak peak.

I was doomed to be completely smitten with Victor before I even met him. First, he’s a senior dog and second he’s a German Shepherd. That he happens to be sweet and good natured made for the perfect trifecta. Victor, who’s one of the elder statesmen for German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California , came to my outdoor studio for a My Mutt poster shoot last week and I can’t tell you how nice it was to have a GSD in my yard again.

I’ve had a run of really cool senior dogs of late. I capped off last weekend with a session for three elder pups: a pointer named Domer, a Brittany Spaniel named Suka, and last (but definitely not least) an Aussie Shepherd called Baloo. All of them are serious characters –very set in their ways– and you can tell they’ve lived together happily for a really long time. Check it out…

Otis

Full disclosure here…I’m a complete and utter sucker for senior dogs. Not that I’m really that objective to begin with when it comes to pets but any sort of logic pretty much flies out the window when I run into a geriatric canine — especially one with any trace of German Shepherd in them. That’s where Otis comes in. I met him this last weekend for a shoot in Golden Gate Park at Stow Lake. When you see the pictures you’ll completely understand why he’s named Otis. It simply just fits.

Otis is originally from Massachussetts near the Cape and is used to living around Cranberry bogs so Stowe is a good West Coast surrogate for that (minus the cranberries). He likes sniffing and spooking around a lot so much of the outing was spent trying to catch him with his snout off the ground (we pet photographers just love a challange)

My favorite bit of personal info about him is that he seems to have a negative thing for Frank Zappa. Apparently, if you show him any of Frank’s album covers he barks at them. Show him anything else and you get nada. How cool is that?
