Trying to photograph two terrier mixes for a poster is like…? You fill in the blank. To be fair Cocoa and Pip’s owner, who rescued them through Rocket Dog said it would be a challenge but I thought, nah, it’ll be on my turf. No problem. Well, let’s just say it took a little longer than usual but in the end we definitely got the money shot. Check it out below…

A few months ago I photographed a really cool dog named Miles Davis for Pet Food Express. Last week I had the chance to work with the rest of his family: Auggie Doggie, Delilah and Fargo. Auggie and Delilah are both terrier mixes and inseperable (don’t tell anyone but Auggie has baldness issues). Fargo is a nice old senior Shepherd mix with a one floppy ear. All together they make quite the picture…

These Dogs Need Homes

I visited ARF out in Walnut Creek last week and met 3 dogs who’ve all been there for a while and really need good homes. All three are loaded with personality and will make great new best friends for the lucky folks who take them home. Scooter’s a little Chihuahua mix who, takes life in stride despite only having three legs. He’s a complete and utter love who likes being held and is very affectionate. Pickle is a cattledog mix with a perpetual smile and a penchant for toys. She’ll make any ball tosser happy. Suze is cute terrier mix who loves belly rubs more than just about anything.

Jeeves: A Terrier At Dolores Park

I’ve been waiting a long time to photograph Jeeves for a My Mutt poster. I’ve met him before because his mom actually works at Pet Food Express and is the person there who lets me know about each new My Mutt assignment — I guess if this were CIA work she’d be considered my handler.

We met for Jeeves’s shoot at Dolores Park in San Francisco’s Mission District on a glorious late Sunday afternoon A few weeks ago and he did not disappoint. He’s a really fun and peppy terrier mix (redundant, I know) with a great personality. He’s constantly shifting between this sort of reflective-intense-serious Jeeves and a high-energy-playful-goofball Jeeves (terrier people will know where I’m coming from because we all live with this 24/7)

Shot of the Week – Working Like a Dog

Sometimes when you’re looking for something to laugh about you don’t need to go much further than your pet. With my dog, Bizzy, humor is a constant thing – pretty much everything he does makes me laugh. Today was no exception.

I was hard at work editing a recent shoot when I heard the distinct sound of a terrier snoring in the next room. Here’s what I saw…

Chloe’s a cute little terrier mix I had the pleasure of photographing over the course of the last several weeks. She totally adores her mom who adopted her through CAPE in Santa Cruz. We split our time between my backyard studio and Baker Beach over near the Golden Gate Bridge. As with most terriers, Chloe is very much into her toys so balls and playing were a central focus for all shoots. Check out how our girl did…

Fiona

I was really excited to meet Fiona for our My Mutt poster photo shoot. Her mom had described her as a 50-pound terrier with a Mohawk so expectations were very high. I was not disappointed. Fiona is lovely and, in addition to the fetching Mohawk (you make it work, Fiona, you really do) she has a striking pair of bright brown eyes you can see a mile away. Her mom rescued her from Marin Humane Society and has done a great job with her.

We met down at Baker Beach in the late afternoon and Fiona did her high-energy terrier thing up and down beach with her favorite toy while we tried to keep her snout relatively sand-free between shots (didn’t quite clean it off for all of them – see below) . Fiona did great and we have a number of contenders for the poster. Help us pick one by voting/commenting below…

Foxy the Superstar

Even though I’m around them all day, sometimes I run into dogs that just blow me away. Foxy is one of those dogs. She’s a rescue dog who was hauled out of conditions too horrific to describe in Taiwan and she has transformed into a remarkable pet. I’ve met her before in September at the Bay Area Pet Fair where she won the best-in-show prize in their famous “The Other Dog Show”. As part of the prize she also won a My Mutt poster at a Pet Food Express store of her choice and last we week we had the shoot for that poster at the amazing Mill Valley Dog run up in Marin.

To make things even more interesting, a TV crew came along to document the experience and the whole thing is going to air this Friday on CBS5 where Pet Food Express has a standing Pets Around the Bay segment every Friday night.

So take a gander at some of my favorite shots and cast your vote on which one should be Foxy’s poster.

Action Jackson

Last Sunday I met a supremely cool terrier mix named Jackson. Mr J is not your typical tiny terrier — more of a mid-size pup but with all the energy, speed and determination of your typical Jack Russell. Oh, and did we mention that he’s a jumper? Golden State Warriors, if you need a new center J is your boy — he has a serious vertical jump and charisma to spare…

Regular readers of Smile Like a Dog my recognize one of the three pups from this recent shoot. Nikah, an adorable little terrier mix, was featured recently on my cover shot for the San Francisco SPCA magazine. Her mom decided to celebrate her fame with a photo session for her and her other two housemates, Bocelli and Monte – two poodle mixes. We split the shoot up at two locales. First was Sutro Heights – one of my favorite spots in San Francisco and the second was at my place in the new backyard studio. I might be crazy but I think fame might be going to Nikah’s head. I could swear she was acting a bit diva-ish.
