Private Pet Sessions

How My Pet Sessions Work

First and foremost this is going to be fun. The entire process is casual and comfortable. I want everyone (humans and pets) to feel special and come away from their time with me happy and excited about the entire experience.

We’ll talk in detail about your pet and how everything is going go — from location choice to prepping your animal for the shoot to the sort of displays you can hang in your home.

Sessions are relaxed and fun — everyone always has a good time and you can expect your pet to be happy and exhausted on the way home after we finish.

Still Got Questions?

Below, I’ve put together a list of the sorts of things people tend to ask me the most about pet photography sessions. If you still can’t find an answer to what you’re looking for I’m happy to speak with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

We can shoot in my San Francisco studio, at your S.F Bay Area home or at an outdoor location. Where we decide will largely depend on your pet. When we speak intially I’ll ask lots of questions abut your animal’s personality and hone in on where they’ll be most comfortable and we’ll get the best results. If we decide to shoot outdoors and you’re not sure of a good location I’m familiar with many scenic spots in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area and can offer suggestions.

II schedule sessions during the week and one day on the weekends–typically Saturday but I can do Sunday with enough notice.  Weekends do fill up quickly so if you’re flexible we can likely get you on the schedule earlier with a weekday session. We’ll also factor in any location preferences you might have and decide on the best  spot.

I tell folks to plan on two hours for standard session. We won’t start right away since it can take time to set up and get the animals comfortable with me and the equipment. Not all shoots last this long but it’s best to be prepared. What if my pet is really shy?

Not a problem. I’m used to dealing with shy and nervous animals ( I have a very nervous Chiweenie myself) always make sure they’re comfortable with me and my equipment before we start shooting. If an animal is extremely shy I may recommend we do the session at your home instead of my studio or location new to them.

You’d be surprised how many of my clients share this trait! A lot of dogs and cats can get fairly amped up during a session — it’s a new thing for them and I tend to work at their level so it’s a lot of direct attention and stimulation. I actually use this to our advantage and some of my favorite images are from sessions where a dog or cat moved a lot. The pet and I usually develop a rapport fairly fast and most respond to high-value treats or a favorite toy and do start to respond to me. The key here is not getting frustrated — pets pick up on that before you even realize you’re doing it then things get even worse. I’m used to taking things at their pace and not getting flustered. You’re in good hands.

Absolutely.  I photograph people all the time can also accommodate multiple pets as long as they get along together. Sessions include up to two animals and two people. If you have more pets or people then that there’s a $50-per-subject add-on for each. I’ll make wardrobe recommendations prior to the shoot day.

The session fee covers the shoot itself plus editing and retouching of the final images. It also includes a mobile web gallery you can view and share on your phone and a $100 credit you can apply toward printed or digital purchases. The session fee does not include prints or digital files. Those are purchased separately when we meet to review the images and figure out how they’re going to look their best in your home.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing my images printed. The internet is great and all and it’s fun looking at images on a phone screen but nothing beats a professionally printed and mounted photograph up on a wall at a decent size!

Most of my clients lean toward contemporary wall displays like metal or canvas prints. Others prefer more traditional framed and matted prints. I offer all of these and work with printers and framers who offer quality and color fidelity you won’t be able to find elsewhere. Your pets will be displayed on true artwork. For folks without much wall space or who want a more subtle approach I have hand-crafted display boxes that hold matted  5×7 or 8×10 prints. The boxes come with a clear top and can be stood on their edge to act as a frame for the matted prints.

While I do personally feel that photographs are meant to be printed I do recognize that in this day and age there are clients who want their end result to be digital (as much as it pains me to know the pixels will be forever trapped in an electronic format!). So I do now offer digital file bundles for purchase.

Files are not included with the session fee but I do provide a custom app for your smart phone you can use to see all your final proof images and share them on social media or email. I also provide downloadable low-res files for phones and social posting with all print purchases (you get a low res file of each image printed) . High-res files for your own projects or archiving are available in groups of 5-25 as well as part of bundled packages of print products. Individual high-res files are included with some individual print products such as wall art and image boxes.
