Meet Mark Rogers, Your Pet Photographer for Oakland

Hi, I’m Mark Rogers, and I’m passionate about capturing the unique personalities of dogs, cats and other animals. I’ve been photographing pets in the Bay Area since 2006, many of them in Oakland.

The Town is one of my favorite places shoot. With its incredible variety of backdrops—like the serene paths around Lake Merritt, the towering redwoods in Joaquin Miller Park, and the vibrant street art in Temescal Alley—there’s no shortage of amazing locations for outdoor pet photography. Whether your dog loves to explore wide-open spaces or your cat prefers to pose in the comfort of home, I’m here to create a session that’s all about your furry friend.

We can plan your session in one of Oakland’s beautiful parks or someplace with a more urban vibe. There’s also your home, or a spot that holds special meaning to you. Or, if you prefer, we can shoot at my San Francisco studio—it’s all about what feels right for you and your pet.

I’ve been helping pet parents like you turn joyful moments into lasting memories. Let’s create something fun, meaningful, and full of personality—just like your pet. Reach out today to start planning your Oakland pet photography session!

Oakland has a lot of excellent places for photographing pets in the city and just outside it. Some of my favorites are Lake Merritt, Redwood Regional Park and Piedmont Park.

For a more urban look there’s tons of colorful murals around the city — Temescal Alley has a lot. There’s also many smaller local parks if you want something near home I’m always game to shoot at a new spot.

A lot of the animals I work with have this in common! Plenty of dogs and cats get pretty wound up during a session—it’s a totally new experience for them, and since I shoot at their level, there’s a lot of eye contact and engagement. But I actually use that energy to our advantage. Some of my favorite shots have come from sessions where a pet just wouldn’t sit still.

I usually build a connection with animals pretty quickly, and most respond well to high-value treats or a favorite toy. They do start tuning in. The trick is to stay patient—animals sense frustration before you even realize it’s there, and that only makes things harder. I’m used to moving at their speed, staying calm, and making it work. You’re in good hands.

I generally shoot in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun is lower and not as harsh. Sometimes that can vary depending on where we do the shoot so I always scout out the location in advance if I haven’t been there before to check out light conditions. If it’s overcast or foggy we can go earlier in the day, schedules permitting.
